COSMETIC TOWN JOURNAL –┬áThe use of non-ablative lasers is preferred by many patients because they are far less invasive than ablative lasers (a wounding laser used to remove thin layers of skin). A non-ablative laser tightens skin that is underlying and it also stimulates collagen growth to fill-in wrinkles and lines by heating the tissue being targeted without actually destroying the tissue. Multiple treatments are usually needed when using non-ablative lasers.

Non-ablative lasers focus on a particular target as part of the functionality of the particular laser frequency. For example, non-ablative lasers target the red of hemoglobin or the pigment at the base of the hair follicle. The targets of the non-ablative lasers are called chromophores. The targets are a particular color that the frequency works on. Non-ablatives are geared towards particular chromophores.
